KINESIS DANCE somatheatro BOX4 at the Dance in Vancouver Festival

Kinesis Dance somatheatro is excited to perform BOX4 by Paraskevas Terezakis at the Dance in Vancouver Festival in Vancouver, BC, Canada (October 14 - 17, 2009). This work is inspired by his successful 1994 piece A Parcel of Men's Knowledge and is an exploration of tensions between four dancers in confined space; through obstacles, confrontation, and cooperation. It is about how we interact with each other in the selfish pursuit of our wants and needs and how this is influenced by the power and contradictions of the mass media. The creative journey of BOX4 is more than a re-telling of a piece but instead a continuation on the notion of confinement, possession, and dominance.

Kinesis Dance somatheatro at The Dance Centre's OPEN HOUSE

The Dance Centre and Kinesis Dance somatheatro present the premiere of Paraskevas Terezakis' ODD-ESSAY: Gleaming I & II as part of the Dance Centre's Open House from 9:30 pm to 10:00 pm on Saturday, September 19, 2009 in the Faris theatre lobby immediately following the PULSE: Claire French & Julie Lebel performance.

Admission is free.

ODD-ESSAY: Gleaming I and II are impressionistic dance scenes in an elevator based on the love story of Penelope and Odysseus in Homer's classic the Odyssey.  Penelope waits twenty years for the return of her husband Odysseus who has left to fight in the Trojan War. The elevator ambivalently represents the potency of their reunion and the distance that has grown between them over such a lengthy time. The closed, confined environment mirrors Penelope's state - her decayed and tangled body so used to being without Odysseus, resurrected with their reuniting.

KINESIS DANCE somatheatro  presents BOX4

Kinesis Dance somatheatro is excited to premiere our newly envisioned contemporary dance piece entitled BOX4 by Paraskevas Terezakis. This work is inspired by his successful 1994 piece A Parcel of Men's Knowledge and is an exploration about how men treat each other in the selfish pursuit of their own wants and needs. BOX4 expresses the tension between aggression, territoriality, and hostility as well as the quest for individual freedom and inner peace. The creative journey of BOX4 is more than a re-telling of a piece but instead a continuation on the notion of confinement, possession, and masculine dominance.

KINESIS DANCE somatheatro NEW PRODUCTION: BOX4

(2008-2009 Season)

The new contemporary dance piece BOX4 by Paraskevas Terezakis, Artistic Director of the Kinesis Dance somatheatro, seeks to explore how the changes in our world have influenced our ability to know ourselves and interact with each other.  It is a piece based on a prior work entitled A Parcel of Men’s Knowledge which was one of the most successful productions created by the company as the theme of the piece resonated strongly with audiences and critics alike. It premiered in 1994 at Performance Works in Vancouver, Canada and was later presented as part of the cultural programming of The 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada. The work was also noticed by the artistic panel of the prestigious international choreographic competition Rencontres Choregraphique Internationales de Seine Saint Denis (based in Paris, France) and the work was featured in Montreal, Canada as part of Canada’s contribution to that international competition.

The new piece BOX4 (premiering in Canada at the Scotiabank Dance Centre April 30th, May 1st, and May 2nd, 2009) seeks to explore these ideas further with an all new cast, new lighting design, and new original musical score. Has our world become more fragmented and atomized than before? Are individuals more ‘boxed in’ nowadays because of advances in technology and the globalization of the world? Are we more aggressive and hostile to one another? Is it harder to find individual freedom and inner peace?

2007-2008 SEASON FROM ABROAD:

Paraskevas Terezakis with the Turkish State Theatre: Romeo and Juliet

Based on the classic Shakespearean play, Terezakis was commissioned by the Turkish State theatre as Choreographer and dramatic coach for the project. Terezakis’ unique and specialized ‘workshop style’ approach during the rehearsal process was welcomed and valued by the 24 member cast.

With this, his second project with Artistic Director Bassar, Terezakis brought a physicality and lyricism not usually found in the play. The stunning set design by Murat Gulmez allowed inventive use of rope columns and giant spandex walls. The choreographic element went well beyond the famous fight and party scenes into a sensual duet, group dynamics and chorus arrangements. Bessar assembled a remarkable cast from all over Turkey to perform this work, the first time ever in the city of Van. An original score by the popular Turkish composer Can Atilla, lighting design by Sehum Ayas and costumes by Nalan Turkoglu added to the work’s success.

Romeo and Juliet played to sold out houses earning standing ovations and critical acclaim. The production will tour Turkey throughout the year. Terezakis and Bessar have already begun discussions for a future collaboration that could include artistic involvement with Canada, Turkey and Greece.

2005-2006 KINESIS DANCE somatheatro ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

METU Festival – Ankara Turkey, February 2005

Terezakis was invited to perform his recent work Conversation at METU, the largest festival of dance and theatre in the Middle East. Terezakis went with Vancouver dancer Carolyn Farquhar, Belgian Canadian dancer Anna Bussey and Belgian Actor Karel Deruwe to perform a work that was developed through his Belgian workshops in 2005. He also was invited to show his short film STORM, which was produced by Ravens West Films and Bravo Fact. STORM is an excerpt from his piece Shellshock made for film.

Following the METU Festival, Terezakis was invited to conduct a 5 day workshop with the actors and performers of the State Theatre of Turkey, Ankara. As a result of the success of this workshop, Paras has been invited to choreograph Hamlet for the State Theatre in 2006/07.

2004/05 SEASON – BUSY TIMES AT HOME AND ABROAD

MASK WORKSHOP: Vancouver May 2004

Kinesis Dance somatheatro and the Scotiabank Dance Centre co-hosted an international workshop event in Vancouver, Canada. Director Nikos Sakalides and Actor Iliana Panagiotouni, from Athens, and Director/Vocalist Costas Palamides, from Caracas, joined Kinesis Artistic Director/Choreographer, Paraskeavas Terezakis to conduct a workshop on the theatrical importance and techniques of the mask. The four day session employed both the contemporary dance vocabulary and the dramatic tools Terezakis has developed over the past years.

MASK & MOVEMENT: Em Cena International Festival, Brazil – August 2004

Em Cena Festival Porto Alegre, Brazil

Following Kinesis dance’s tour to Venezuela in November 2003, Terezakis was invited to re-assemble the mask workshop team for a similar event at the August 2004 Em Cena International Festival, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This prestigious festival, which attracts dance and theatre artists from around the world, featured an opening week of workshops, round-table discussions and creative intensives.

With momentum built during the Vancouver workshop, Terezakis and his colleagues re-grouped and conducted another intensive and highly productive workshop at the Festival. With 24 participants from Brazil, Latin America, Japan and Australia, the group had more time (and experience) to go deeper into the process and create an atmosphere of discovery and intense drama. Working again with international artists (and without the convenience of a common language), Terezakis was forced to get quickly to the core of movement using the body’s ‘voice’ and the mask as both generators and manipulators of expression.
